Georgia’s Parliament overrode President Giorgi Margvelashvili’s veto of a local self-government bill on 26 July. The bill has faced criticism for making controversial core changes to the previous self-governing legislation without the consent of civil society organisations.
The Parliament of Adygea has passed a resolution asking for permission to completely ban low-alcohol energy drinks in the republic. The 26 July proposal has been forwarded to the federal authorities.
On 26 June, a rally against labour migrants from Asia was held in Ingushetia. Local police forcibly dispersed the rally, and several people were charged with violating public order.
A rights group in Kabardino-Balkaria is putting a former Soviet era official, who was executed for crimes he was later acquitted for back on trial. According to recent claims, Betal Kalmykov committed crimes against humanity as leader of Kabardino-Balkaria.
Protesters in four villages of Daghestan’s Derbent District blocked a local road on 25 July demanding that the authorities move a landfill from near their villages. The local authorities have promised to address the problem.
Two men were detained on 21 July in Makhachkala on suspicion of kidnapping Ibragim Kazibekov, Daghestan’s Minister of Construction, Architecture, Housing, and Communal Services. The minister’s abduction and arrests were announced on 24 July. [Read more…]
A court in Baku has sentenced the financial director of an Azerbaijani newspaper to three years and three months in prison, on what he calls bogus charges.
Searches are continuing in Ingushetia for two local men who disappeared without a trace five days ago. Police and relatives have so far failed to find a trace of the missing men, according to the Ingush Interior Ministry. [Read more…]
