Chechen Head Ramzan Kadyrov is planning to visit Syria, Russian MP and Kadyrov’s cousin Adam Delimkhanov told media on 22 March, during a trip of Russian MPs to Aleppo. Delimkhanov refused to specify when Kadyrov was planning to visit.

On 21 March, local Ingush man Ilyas Albakov was detained in Ingushetia for his alleged involvement in an international terrorist organisation. According to the head of the Ingush Security Council, Akhmed Dzeytov, he is accused of being a member of the Islamic State in Syria. Other details of this case, including the time he spent with the Islamic State in Syria, have not been released.

Protest rallies erupted in the Armenian capital of Yerevan last week after the death of Artur Sargsyan, who passed away after being on hunger strike for 25 days. Sargsyan was accused of assisting the ‘Daredevils of Sasun’ — an armed group of Karabakh war veterans who stormed a police station in Yerevan in July 2016, taking hostages. Two police officers were killed during the crisis.
Since the beginning of March, a major subbotnik (voluntary unpaid work) has been taking place in Grozny, aimed at cleaning up the city’s streets and roads. Employees of virtually all official institutions participated, with many of them admitting unofficially that the work is compulsory.
Police are searching for alleged militants and their accomplices in the Daghestani city Khasavyurt and three villages in the north of the republic. On the night of 16–17 March, the Federal Security Service (FSB) building in Ingushetia’s Malgobek District came under fire from a rocket propelled grenade. The corner of the building was hit, damaging the exterior. No-one was injured in the incident.
