The Ingush authorities are to introduce new measures in their fight against traffic offenders, which will target officials and other civil servants. They plan to address the critical state of Ingushetia’s roads by publicly shaming traffic violators.

According to the authorities, analyses of traffic accident statistics show that a large percentage of traffic violations are committed by state employees. The new measure will include broadcasting the names of such violators on local media stations.

Ingush Head Yunus-Bek Yevkurov also authorised volunteers to help traffic police in Ingush settlements. Earlier this year, Yevkurov said that he was taking the situation on the republic’s roads under his personal control, and that he would gather weekly information about violators of traffic rules.

Yevkurov previously pledged to broadcast the names of traffic offenders in July 2014.

During a special meeting, Yevkurov discussed the issue with Ingushetia’s Minister of Internal Affairs, Dmitry Kava, according to whom 76 people died last year in traffic accidents in Ingushetia. This year the death toll has already reached 21.

‘I think that the reason for this situation is that the principle of the inevitability of punishment is not fully effective. The tragedy which took place on 7 April on the federal highway, as a result of which two people died on the spot and another two were hospitalised, is a vivid confirmation of this’, Kava said.
