A majority of councillors from Borjomi’s municipal council (sakrebulo) have signed a request to impeach the head of the council, the only one in Georgia not controlled by the ruling Georgian Dream party. The move comes as a crisis between the council and the mayor’s office continues, over the council’s refusal to sign off on a staff budget for the mayor’s office which included pay rises for the top positions. The son of Zurab Neparidze, a former member of the Tbilisi City Council (sakrebulo), has claimed the prosecution blackmailed his family with compromising footage, allegedly featuring his father. Neparidze was arrested on corruption charges in August 2017, and his trial is ongoing. [Read more…]
A member of the Tbilisi City Council (sakrebulo) has been arrested on corruption charges, and may face 7–11 years of jail. Temur Gorgadze, a majoritarian councillor from Krtsanisi District for Georgian Dream, was arrested on 28 February.
Journalists have been barred from attending Yerevan City Council days after reporting on the physical assault of two female councillors. Two women from the opposition Yerkir Tsirani (Apricot Country) party were attacked last week and thrown out of the council by a number male councillors from the ruling Republican Party.
Tbilisi City Council has transferred two plots of land in Tbilisi to the Georgian Orthodox Church. A decision to give away more than 44 additional hectares is pending. [Read more…]
