Ruslan Gvashev, a 67-year-old Circassian activist who was fined for performing a traditional Circassian prayer in public, has ended his hunger strike after 25 days. The appeal against his fine has been postponed.
Authorities in a number of cities in Krasnodar Krai have rejected a request to hold queer pride parades and street rallies. A number of local queer rights activists have been critical of the request, arguing that it could jeopardise their work.
Police and Cossacks detained four tourists for dancing lezginka — a traditional Caucasian dance — in a public space on 13 August, in the city of Gelendzhik, Krasnodar Krai. Three have now been released while the fourth is being held for ‘violating public order’. [Read more…]
