A person has been charged in Georgia with attacking a transgender woman because of her gender identity. The Prosecutor’s Office says an investigation into the case revealed that the defendant inflicted injuries on the woman by striking her several times.
Despite reports of violence and discrimination against queer people often hitting the news, for Wagdy (Egypt), Riri (Azerbaijan), and Misha (Nigeria), Georgia represents a safe place where they can finally be themselves. While some find a new life in Georgia free from fear, the country’s opaque asylum procedures threaten to send some of them back, their presence deemed ‘contradictory to the interests of the country’.

A fight took place in Tbilisi on 1 May between two transgender women and their neighbours; police arrested four people. One of the neighbors was fined ₾100 ($40) for ‘petty hooliganism’, while the other was released. A hearing for the two transgender women was delayed until 4 May. The interviewee wants to be called ‘Humay.’ She says that despite the fact that she was born into a masculine body, she feels herself a woman, and her main purpose is to feel comfortable in her own body. “Those who look through my childhood photos and videos say that I looked like a girl in the photos. When I wore a man’s costume, it felt uncomfortable. So, it is from birth. When I started to think that I felt myself to be a girl, I did not suspect this feeling,” 20-year-old Humay, says.
