According to preliminary results from Armenia’s parliamentary elections, the ruling Republican Party (HHK) has won, with 49% of votes. The Tsarukyan Bloc came a distant second, with 27%. On 1 April, the Russian Investigative Committee in Chechnya issued an arrest warrant for businessman Isa Yamadayev for attempted murder. According to investigators, Yamadayev was behind the May 2016 attempt to assassinate Chechen Head Ramzan Kadyrov, in the Nozhay-Yurt District of Chechnya. Investigators claim that the assassination attempt was part of a blood feud, in revenge for the murders of two of his brothers — Sulim and Ruslan Yamadayev. [Read more…]

At a session of the Chechen Parliament on 31 March, a bill was approved guaranteeing schoolchildren and students the right to wear the hijab and other religious symbols. MPs voted unanimously for the bill, which will apply throughout Chechnya. [Read more…]

Employees of the government run Ingushavtotrans transport company have been on strike since 28 March over delayed wages. Being paid on time is the only demand of the striking workers. They claim that the last time they received their salaries was in October 2016.
Several hectares of land are occupied by illegal landfills in six districts of Daghestan. Almost all of them were created spontaneously on land intended for agriculture, and specialists are concerned about environmental problems in these areas. [Read more…]
