Three leaders and several participants of Ingush protests against the land swap deal with Chechnya were arrested this week.
Thousands of protesters have returned to the streets of Ingushetia’s largest city, Nazran, to oppose a land deal with neighbouring Chechnya. The authorities have responded by banning further protests and firing the republic’s interior minister and disbanding a local police unit after reports they sided with protesters against units of the Russian National Guard. Russian rights group Memorial’s office in Nazran has been severely damaged in an arson attack. Early morning on 17 January, two people wearing masks entered the second floor of the building, which houses the group’s office, and set it ablaze.
On 19 August, Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) raided the Fabrika Market in Nazran, Ingushetia’s largest city. The authorities seized a large amount of gold jewellery from stalls. The owners and vendors claim that the FSB’s actions were illegal.
