A secret audio recording released on Friday suggests that former Georgian sports minister Levan Kipiani attempted to extort expensive cars for other ministers from Omega Group, a business group that owns local TV channel Iberia TV. An atmosphere of impunity and poor funding for schools in Kabardino-Balkaria has led to state schools being run as businesses, with a teachers making money at the expense of parents and their children.
Two men were detained on 21 July in Makhachkala on suspicion of kidnapping Ibragim Kazibekov, Daghestan’s Minister of Construction, Architecture, Housing, and Communal Services. The minister’s abduction and arrests were announced on 24 July. [Read more…]
A huge brawl broke out between residents of a village in western Chechnya’s Achkhoy-Martan District, and local police on 26 March. Three young people from the village of Davydenko were detained for ‘disobeying police’. A dispute over land registration on one of the village’s streets was the reason for the skirmish.
