A court in Makhachkala, the capital of the Russian Republic of Daghestan has sentenced the city’s former mayor to four years in prison on corruption charges.
Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s My Step bloc has won a landslide in Yerevan’s City Council elections, with their candidate, Hayk Marutyan, set to become the capital’s new mayor. On Tuesday, Russia’s Deputy Prosecutor General, Ivan Sydoruk, approved the indictment of Musa Musayev, the former mayor of the Daghestani capital Makhachkala. Musayev was charged with illegally giving away land worth ₽48 million ($700,000). He was originally arrested for fraud of ₽80 million ($1.2 million).
The mayor of Marneuli, in southern Georgia, and an MP have been charged with inhumane and degrading treatment and assault respectively. Mayor Temur Abazov and MP Azer Suleimanov were charged on Wednesday after videos were posted on Facebook appearing to show a man being forced to wipe his own urine on his face and apologise for insulting ruling party officials. The mayor of Borjomi Municipality, in southern Georgia’s Samtskhe–Javakheti Region, refused to show up for work on 2 March, along with 90 other employees of the mayor’s office. They went on strike after not being paid for the past three months, in a disagreement between the municipal council (sakrebulo) and the mayor’s office over pay. [Read more…]
Georgian authorities and Grozny Mayor Muslim Khuchiyev have denied holding secret security talks in Georgia. Khuchiyev was recorded by journalists from Rustavi 2 at a hotel in Batumi, fuelling speculation his visit was related to recent counterterror operations in Georgia.
The Mayor of Makhachkala, Musa Musayev, has been arrested on corruption charges, and is being held in a temporary detention facility. According to the prosecution, he gave away city land to a commercial firm worth ₽80 million ($1.4 million).
Dozens of heads of publicly run kindergartens in Tbilisi have been instructed to collect lists of voters they think might vote for Kakha Kaladze in upcoming local elections, according to an investigation. Kaladze, an ex Energy Minister, is running for Mayor of Tbilisi for the ruling Georgian Dream party.
Twenty-seven-year-old Badrudin Musayev, the son of the current mayor of Makhachkala, Musa Musayev, was tried on charges of using force and insulting the authorities. The case was being considered in the Sovetsky District Court of the capital of Daghestan for several months. The court found the mayor’s son innocent.
