An MP in Daghestan’s parliament was arrested on Wednesday night accused of creating a vast criminal network issuing fake disability certificates in exchange for bribes. Investigators said Magomed Makhachev, who headed the Main Bureau of Medical and Social Expertise in Daghestan was responsible for a scheme costing the state at least ₽24 million ($380,000). A small group of people gathered in the central square of Makhachkala, the capital of Daghestan, on 20 July protesting their pending eviction from their houses. The buildings are due to be demolished as part of a federal resettlement programme for people living in dangerous or unstable housing, but the occupants insist their current housing is safe and that they do not want to move. The recent extermination of stray dogs in Kaspiysk, a town in Daghestan, with the support of local authorities there has caused outrage among animal rights activists.
The local authorities in the Daghestani city of Kaspiysk were fined ₽300,000 ($5,400) on 14 April, for building on the city’s beach.
On 5 March, about 50 people staged a protest against construction projects on beach in the Daghestani city of Kaspiysk. The activists doubt the city authorities’ assurances that the beach will be improved.
