14 March 2017

An agent from the Centre for Countering Extremism under the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Daghestan has been arrested for accepting a ₽3 million ($50,000) bribe. The suspect allegedly demanded the bribe from a woman who had been assaulted and robbed in exchange for help in identifying her attackers. A criminal case has been brought against him.

A source in Daghestan’s police department told OC Media that the suspect was responsible for working on several particularly important cases.

‘We were approached by a woman who claimed she that had fallen victim to the suspect. According to her, the operative demanded ₽4 million ($70,000) to help her identify the people who robbed her. After some time he reduced the amount to ₽3 million ($50,000). In the interests of the investigation, we can’t disclose the name of the suspect’, the source said.

According to the press service of the Investigative Committee of Daghestan, the suspect was detained on 10 March while receiving the bribe.

‘Currently, an investigation is being conducted aimed at securing the evidentiary base. The question of choosing preventive measures against the suspect is being decided’, the press release reads.
