The trial of investigative journalist Afgan Mukhtarli began in Azerbaijan’s Balakan District Court on 30 November. Mukhtarli was abducted from Georgia and taken to Azerbaijan in May, where he was charged with illegally crossing the border in possession of €10,000 ($11,200) in illegal money, which Mukhtarli’s lawyer claims was planted on him.
Azerbaijani journalist Leyla Mustafayeva, whose husband, investigative journalist Afgan Mukhtarli was abducted in Georgia and taken to Azerbaijan, has left the country with her daughter. She plans to request asylum in Germany.

The foreign ministers of Georgia, Azerbaijan, and Turkey have signed the ‘Action Plan for Trilateral Sectoral Co-operation for 2017–2019’ in Baku, marking another step in the trilateral format initiated five years ago. The meetings passed without mention of either Afgan Mukhtarli, a journalist, abducted from Tbilisi to Baku, and school manager Mustafa Emre Çabuk, who is currently being deported on Turkey’s request.
