A dispute between an entrepreneur and greenhouse owner in Daghestan’s Nogay district and residents of the village of Nariman took on an ethnic component after a video allegedly of Chinese workers cooking a dog alive went viral on social media. But some from the district have questioned whether this is the true cause of the conflict.
On 26 June, a rally against labour migrants from Asia was held in Ingushetia. Local police forcibly dispersed the rally, and several people were charged with violating public order.
The central food market in the Daghestani capital of Makhachkala has been temporarily closed by the authorities, as police conduct an inspection to find illegal workers.
Daghestan’s Interior Ministry Migration Service detained about 200 Azerbaijani nationals in the city of Derbent on 9 February, in order to inspect their work permits.
