The head of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov, has criticised Russian Education Minister Olga Vasilyeva for demanding a ban on the hijab in Russian schools.
On January 24, the minister said that students at school ‘should not emphasise their religion with any accessories’. She added that ‘true believers’ do not need to emphasise their beliefs with accessories.
Kadyrov, writing on his Instagram page, countered that the shawl is not an accessory, but a ‘very important part of Muslim women’s clothes.’ The head of Chechnya expressed surprise that the minister was imposing her opinion on millions of citizens. He claims that the issue of Muslim shawls is being exploited to divert public attention from the real problems in Russian schools.
‘There are problems with drugs, criminals, alcohol, and systematic sexual assault of children. This is what everyone should be concerned about, those people who fight against hijabs’, Kadyrov wrote.
He continued that his daughters will never give up wearing the hijab, and so he will be forced to send them elsewhere, where Islamic clothing is permitted.
Many in Chechnya have expressed disapproval at the Education Minister’s comments. Local clergy and ordinary citizens are already condemning her statement.
The Spiritual Administration of Muslims of Chechnya has already condemned the statement for its discrimination on religious grounds. In an official statement published on their website, they write that ‘the right of Muslims to choose clothes should not be a subject of discussion or contested by people of other faiths’.
