Russia has called for the borders between South Ossetia and Abkhazia and Georgian Government controlled territories to be delineated. On Tuesday and Wednesday, the 62nd round of the international discussion on security and stability in the South Caucasus was held in Geneva, Switzerland. The Russian Foreign Ministry stated on Wednesday that the process of ‘delimitation of the Georgian–Abkhazian and Georgian–South Ossetian state borders with their subsequent demarcation’ should be launched.

Abkhazia’s Foreign Minister, Inal Ardzinba, has warned about ‘provocations’ aimed at Abkhazia from Georgia as well as those by Ukraine generally, in a joint press conference with Russian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Maria Zakharova. The minister began the conference in Sukhum (Sukhumi) on Friday by accusing Georgia of conducting a ‘hybrid information war’. Ardzinba said the ministry was developing ‘special software’ to analyse publications about Abkhazia in foreign and international media.

The latest round of the Geneva discussions have ended with mutual accusations. Despite hopes from Abkhazia, South Ossetia, and Russia, the parties failed to agree on a  joint oral statement on the non-use of force. Georgia criticised Russia for their ‘destructive approach’ towards the possible non-use of force agreement. Abkhazia accused the US of using ‘unacceptable wording’ in the agreement. According to the Georgian delegation, neither South Ossetia nor Russia ‘had anything to say’ ab

Georgian PM under fire after call for ‘direct dialogue with Abkhazians and Ossetians’

The Georgian PM’s statement last Friday calling for ‘direct dialogue with the Abkhazians and the Ossetians’ and improving relations with Russia has come under fire from opposition parties. The EU’s Ambassador to Georgia said PM Giorgi Kvirikashvili’s statement ‘argues for sensible steps’ while Russia said it was ‘satisfied’ with the statement. On 12 March, Russia’s Foreign Ministry issued a short statement, saying they are ‘satisfied’ with the spirit of Georgian Prime Minister’s statement o
