Azerbaijan re-arrests opposition activists detained for ‘quarantine violation’

Three members of the opposition Popular Front Party who were earlier detained on quarantine violations charges have been re-arrested. Ruslan Amirov, a bodyguard for Popular Front Party leader Ali Karimli, was given 15 days of administrative detention on Friday on charges of petty hooliganism.  Amirov was one of the first of dozens of opposition activists arrested during the quarantine regime in Azerbaijan. He was detained on 9 April on quarantine violation charges and released after a month.

Detained opposition activists ‘tortured’ in Azerbaijan

Two members of the opposition Popular Front Party who were detained on quarantine violation charges have reportedly been tortured while in detention.  The party stated on Sunday that Niyameddin Ahmadov, the bodyguard of party leader Ali Karimli, was taken from his cell to an unknown location on 28 April where he was tortured for 12 hours. The opposition Popular Front Party claims that 11 of its members have been arrested in the past two weeks, and the party’s leader has reportedly had his phone and internet cut.
