Tumso Abdurakhmanov, a popular Chechen YouTuber and an ardent critic of the Chechen government has been denied political asylum in Poland.
The Tbilisi Court of Appeals upheld on 26 January the decision to deny asylum to Mustafa Emre Çabuk. The former manager at Tbilisi’s Private Demirel College, which has been linked to Turkish opposition political figure Fethullah Gülen, is being sought by Turkey on terror charges. In the last six years, 5,885 people registered for asylum in Georgia, only quarter of which were granted humanitarian or refugee status, data published by Institute for Development of freedom of Information (IDFI) indicates. Azerbaijani journalist Afgan Mukhtarli, who was abducted in Georgia last May, was sentenced to 6 years in prison by an Azerbaijani court on 12 January. He was convicted of smuggling €10,000 ($11,200) in cash, border trespass, and disobeying border guards. [Read more…]

Despite reports of violence and discrimination against queer people often hitting the news, for Wagdy (Egypt), Riri (Azerbaijan), and Misha (Nigeria), Georgia represents a safe place where they can finally be themselves. While some find a new life in Georgia free from fear, the country’s opaque asylum procedures threaten to send some of them back, their presence deemed ‘contradictory to the interests of the country’.
Azerbaijani journalist Leyla Mustafayeva, whose husband, investigative journalist Afgan Mukhtarli was abducted in Georgia and taken to Azerbaijan, has left the country with her daughter. She plans to request asylum in Germany.

Three internally displaced people (IDPs) from the city of Zugdidi in western Georgia have attempted to cross into Abkhazia to ask for asylum. The move was in protest at what they say is negligence from the Georgian government.
